HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – Dr. Andre Lewis has cautioned that his decision to resign as a We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, as police continue investigating serious allegations against the now-former parliamentarian.
Nightly News understands that the allegations are sexual in nature and involve a person who was a minor at the time of the alleged conduct.
Lewis was arrested and taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, where he was questioned by investigators before being released. Against that backdrop, Lewis formally submitted his resignation to Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, indicating that it takes effect upon receipt of the letter.
In explaining his decision, Lewis said the seriousness of the matter and the responsibilities associated with public office made stepping away from the National Assembly the appropriate course while the investigation continues.
“Given the seriousness of the matter and the responsibilities attached to public office, I believe that resigning from the National Assembly is the appropriate course of action while the relevant processes are ongoing,” Lewis stated.
He stressed, however, that leaving Parliament does not amount to an admission of wrongdoing or a determination of guilt.
WIN Leader and Representative of the List Azruddin Mohamed had also formally notified the Speaker about the allegations involving Lewis.
Lewis said he remains committed to due process and allowing investigators to carry out their work. The allegations remain under investigation, and no finding of guilt has been made against Lewis.
Lewis entered the National Assembly as a first-time WIN parliamentarian following the 2025 elections.
