Barbados & Venezuela: Energy Security and “Hydrocarbon Harmony”
BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS — Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez have concluded a high-level bilateral summit aimed at fortifying socio-economic ties between the two nations. The discussions centered on a strategic partnership to stabilize energy prices and guarantee supply chains in a volatile global market.
- Hydrocarbon Partnership: Rodríguez highlighted a new role for Barbados in assisting Caracas with increasing its hydrocarbon production. In exchange, Venezuela has pledged to guarantee the long-term “energy safety” of the Barbadian people.
- Beyond Fossil Fuels: While oil and gas dominated the agenda, PM Mottley successfully pushed for the cooperation to extend into renewable energy initiatives, aiming to leverage Venezuelan technical expertise for regional green energy transitions.
- Economic Diplomacy: The initiatives also cover trade, culture, and broader economic cooperation, marking a significant deepening of relations at a time of heightened regional geopolitical sensitivity.

International: UAE Quits OPEC Amid Middle East Conflict & Oil Discord
ABU DHABI, UAE — In a move that has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Tuesday that it is withdrawing from the oil-producers’ group OPEC and the wider OPEC+ alliance. The decision highlights a growing rift among Gulf nations as the ongoing war involving Iran continues to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
- Strategic Autonomy: UAE Energy Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei stated the exit followed a “review of regional strategies” and confirmed that Saudi Arabia was not consulted prior to the announcement.
- Market Impact: While global spare capacity is at historical lows, the UAE believes operating outside the bloc will allow it to leverage its “low-cost and low-carbon barrels” more effectively, potentially acting as a net positive for global consumers.
- The Trump Factor: The exit is being viewed as a major victory for U.S. President Donald Trump, who has long criticized OPEC for “ripping off the world.” The move aligns with the U.S. administration’s pressure on Gulf allies to stabilize prices in exchange for military support.
