Jamaica Reviews Sacramental Framework for Religious Cannabis Use
KINGSTON, JAMAICA — The Government of Jamaica is intensifying public and stakeholder consultations to overhaul its framework for the sacramental use of cannabis. The review aims to strengthen administrative governance, protect legitimate religious freedoms, and preserve the integrity of the nation’s legal cannabis sector.
During a high-level ministerial meeting at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, officials evaluated a proposal to shift operational governance of the sacramental framework to the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Delano Seiveright, explained that the transition reflects the framework’s deep connection to Jamaica’s cultural and religious heritage.
The review follows recommendations from the Cannabis Industry Development Taskforce and focuses on several key areas:
- Recognition Criteria: Establishing clearer guidelines to verify legitimate religious organizations.
- Cultivation and Transport Limits: Setting statutory boundaries for approved cultivation lands and transport protocols.
- Enforcement & Oversight: Strengthening enforcement to clearly separate sacramental use from illicit or commercial operations.
