HGP Nightly News – A 20-year-old police constable has been remanded to prison over the murder of Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gomez.
Randy Thomas appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the indictable murder charge was read to him. He was not required to plead and was remanded until July 21, when the case is expected to continue.
The charge follows the death of 26-year-old Gomez, who was reported missing after she was last seen on June 18 while heading to work at the Mon Repos Health Centre.
Six days later, her decomposed body was found in bushes at Enmore Backdam, East Coast Demerara. The discovery led police to intensify their murder investigation.
Investigators have said Thomas was known to Gomez, and that evidence gathered during the probe led to his arrest.
Authorities have not released a motive for the alleged killing. The investigation is ongoing.
