HGP Nightly News – Tensions ran high in Skeldon late last night as residents took to the streets following the death of 16-year-old Altaf King, an incident that has sparked grief, anger, and calls for answers.
Against that backdrop, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond has appealed for calm, while assuring the public that the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death will be fully investigated.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of 16-year-old Altaf King,” Walrond said in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of profound grief.”
The minister said the matter will be the subject of a “thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” adding that “every aspect of the incident will be carefully examined.”
Walrond also gave assurances that if wrongdoing is found, action will follow.
“If any criminal or disciplinary culpability is established, it will be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law,” she said. “No one is above accountability.”
As emotions remain high in the community, the minister appealed to residents of Skeldon and surrounding areas to remain calm and allow the investigation to move forward.
“I also appeal to the residents of Skeldon and the surrounding communities to remain calm, refrain from actions that may endanger lives and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference,” Walrond said.
She added that while she understands “the grief and concern being expressed,” it is important that the truth be established “through a comprehensive and independent investigation.”
