In support of the United Nationsโ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), is expanding access to electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide โ part of Guyanaโs ongoing transition toward clean, reliable, and modern energy systems.
Antonio Dey tells us more.
Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined by the United Nations Development Programme, ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy remains a key global priority.
Here in Guyana, that vision is being realised through the installation of additional EV charging stations in collaboration with the UNDP Guyana office and the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA).
โThere is the joint SDG project where we talked about the charging stations we are establishing here in Guyana. We will have four charging stations established in Regions Three, Four, Five, and Six โ one in at least each region,โ
said Nerissa Pearson, Communications Lead at UNDP Guyana, during an interview with Nightly News.
Pearson noted that the initiative forms part of the UNDPโs low-carbon emissions project, aimed at supporting Guyanaโs clean energy transition and promoting energy efficiency across sectors.
โThis is part of the full fleet of charging stations that the GEA will have in every regional location along the coast,โ
Pearson explained.
The broader goal, she said, is to increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030 and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahender Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, said progress in electric mobility reflects the governmentโs low-carbon development strategy, with national investments in infrastructure, training, and fiscal incentives to accelerate the EV transition.
According to a GEA release dated October 2, six public charging stations are already operational in Regions Three, Four, and Six, located at:
- Amazonia Mall, Providence
- Giftland Mall, Liliendaal
- S&R Parking Lot, Parika
- Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri
- Little Rock Suites, New Amsterdam
- GEA Head Office, Georgetown
Private entities, including Starr Computers, have also joined the growing EV network.
This initiative underscores Guyanaโs alignment with the UNDPโs global energy and sustainability agenda, balancing development with environmental protection and innovation.
