PNCR, APNU Mourn Passing Of Former Leader Robert Corbin

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have expressed profound grief and heartfelt condolences following the passing of former Party Leader, veteran statesman, and Attorney-at-Law Mr. Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, CCH, affectionately known across the Guyanese political landscape by his initials, “RHO.”

In an official joint dispatch issued on Sunday, the political organizations paid tribute to Corbin’s decades of dedicated public service, describing him as an astute, disciplined, loyal, and tireless stalwart who helped steer both the party and the nation through turbulent transitions.

His political career spanned virtually every rank of party leadership—from heading its youth arm to commanding the party executive—alongside senior ministerial appointments culminating in the office of Deputy Prime Minister of Guyana.

A Lifelong Political Ascent: From the YSM to Party Leader

Mr. Corbin’s political journey within the People’s National Congress began in his youth, establishing a record of disciplined grassroots activism that carried him to the summit of the party structure:

  • Youth Leadership: Corbin first emerged as a prominent political organizer serving as the National Chairman of the Young Socialist Movement (YSM), the youth organ of the PNC.
  • Party Administration & Leadership: He subsequently advanced to serve as the General Secretary of the PNCR, later assuming the mantle of Leader of the PNCR following the death of former President Hugh Desmond Hoyte in December 2002.
  • Cabinet and Executive Portfolios: In public administration, Corbin served the Cooperative Republic in multiple senior executive and legislative roles, including Parliamentary Secretary, substantive Cabinet Minister across key ministries, and Deputy Prime Minister.

The Architect of Modern Coalition Politics

The PNCR and APNU placed particular emphasis on Corbin’s strategic vision, crediting him with fundamentally reshaping Guyana’s opposition framework by advocating for multi-party consensus:

  • Guiding the Coalition Pivot: Rather than pursuing single-party electoral paths, Corbin recognized the shifting demographics and political dynamics of Guyana, becoming instrumental in steering the PNCR toward broad-based, coalition-oriented politics.
  • The Genesis of 2015 Victory: His foundational groundwork in uniting disparate political movements led directly to the formation of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) partnership in 2011, which later expanded into the APNU+AFC coalition that achieved historic electoral success in the May 2015 General and Regional Elections.
  • Dual Career in Law: Alongside high-stakes politics, Corbin advanced his academic and professional qualifications, reading for the law and being admitted to practice as an Attorney-at-Law, providing ongoing legal counsel to the party apparatus.

An ‘Irreplaceable Loss’ to Party and Nation

Even while confronting failing health in his later years, party officials noted that Corbin’s dedication to institutional stability never wavered, as he regularly made himself available to mentor emerging leaders and provide strategic counsel:

  • Counsel During Illness: The party noted that his commitment remained undiminished throughout his period of illness, offering steady advice behind the scenes on national matters and internal governance.
  • Condolences Extended: The PNCR and APNU extended condolences to his widow, Mrs. Corbin, his children, extended family, legal colleagues, and party members across Guyana and the diaspora.

Describing his passing as an “irreplaceable loss,” the leadership of the PNCR and APNU affirmed that Robert Corbin’s enduring legacy will remain deeply etched in the political and democratic history of Guyana.
