GUYANA POLICE FORCE WARNS AGAINST USE OF FIRECRACKERS, FORCE CITED SERIOUS PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a stern warning to individuals and businesses against participating in the illegal sale, purchase, possession, and use of firecrackers and other explosive devices, citing serious public safety concerns as the country transitions into the New Year.

In a strongly worded statement, the police noted that the end-of-year period typically sees a surge in firecracker use. This trend has previously resulted in grievous bodily harm to both adults and children.

The Force recalled several past incidents in which the use of firecrackers led to severe injuries, stressing the need for caution and responsible behaviour. Citizens were urged to carefully consider the risks involved before purchasing or using such items.

The GPF reminded the public that the sale, purchase, and possession of explosives without lawful permission are strictly prohibited under Sections 131 and 132 of the Explosives Act, Chapter 16:06. Anyone found selling, distributing, or possessing firecrackers or similar explosive devices without the required permit from the Minister or the appropriate authority will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Regional Commanders across the country have been instructed to intensify enforcement efforts to prevent the illegal distribution of firecrackers. These measures include targeted seizures, raids, and searches based on intelligence reports indicating unlawful activity.

Meanwhile, animal welfare advocates have also appealed to the public to refrain from using firecrackers during New Year celebrations. In a heartfelt plea, they urged citizens, businesses, and the government to choose compassion over noise.

The advocates highlighted the extreme distress that fireworks and firecrackers cause to animals, noting that the loud explosions can lead to panic, injury, and even death. They further pointed out that fireworks negatively impact vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the sick, and young children.

The organization is calling on the public to be considerate and empathetic, emphasizing the importance of protecting those who are unable to defend themselves during the festive period.
