VIGILANCE / BUXTON, EAST COAST DEMERARA — Heightened tension gripped the East Coast Demerara communities of Vigilance and Buxton late Tuesday afternoon after civil unrest erupted into fiery street blockades, suspected gunfire, and the torching of a commercial sand truck.
While the Guyana Police Force (GPF) officially confirmed that public disturbances occurred, the law enforcement apparatus has maintained complete official silence regarding prior disclosures made by police sources to reporters: namely, that the confrontation was ignited when ranks moved to execute a search warrant at the Vigilance residence of Mark “Demon” Cromwell in connection with a sensitive cross-border investigation involving two missing Surinamese nationals.
Heavily armed police patrols were deployed across the corridor on Tuesday evening to maintain order, clear smoldering debris from access routes, and safeguard commuters along the main thoroughfares.
The Tuesday Afternoon Confrontation: Blockades, Arson, and Gunfire
According to preliminary statements issued by Police Headquarters, tactical ranks were dispatched to a location within Vigilance at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, under the umbrella of an unspecified “ongoing investigation.”
Upon arrival, ranks were confronted by active, coordinated resistance:
- Access Corridors Barricaded: Several entry streets and side access points were obstructed by burning tyres, wooden pallets, scrap iron, and combustible refuse to prevent police vehicles from advancing.
- Firefighters Attacked: Units from the Guyana Fire Service were summoned to extinguish the flaming barricades, but responding fire crews were forced to withdraw temporarily after individuals hurled missiles and debris at them while continuing to feed flammable materials into the fires.
- Commercial Truck Set Ablaze: Along the Buxton Railway Embankment, a sand truck was intercepted and set on fire. The flames engulfed the vehicle, causing extensive destruction to its front cabin and engine bay.
- Loud Explosions: Police reported hearing several loud explosions, strongly suspected to be gunshots, echoing across the vicinity moments before the sand truck was found fully ablaze.
The Unspoken Target: The Mark ‘Demon’ Cromwell Connection
Noticeably absent from the formal release issued by Police Public Relations was any explanation regarding the substantive intelligence that brought operational units into the Vigilance neighborhood.
However, senior police sources had earlier briefed journalists on background, confirming that the operation was directly linked to the home of Mark Cromwell, well known by the street moniker “Demon”:
- Building of Interest: Investigators designated Cromwell’s Vigilance property as a primary location of interest in an active missing-persons and intelligence probe surrounding two Surinamese men who reportedly crossed into Guyana more than a month ago and have since vanished.
- Armed Pushback: Operational sources indicated that when ranks attempted to enter and execute the search warrant on the premises, localized resistance escalated into a standoff, culminating in the barricades and vehicular arson along the embankment.
Despite direct inquiries from the press seeking clarity on the raid, the police administration declined to acknowledge the warrant, Cromwell’s residence, or the transnational missing persons inquiry.
Discrepancies Over Arrests and Continuing Probes
The official narrative also diverged sharply from ground reports regarding detentions:
- Official Position: The Guyana Police Force’s formal bulletin reported no arrests, stating only that investigators have mapped closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the Vigilance and Buxton corridors and will review recorded footage to identify individuals who ignited fires and assaulted emergency responders.
- Contradictory Detentions: In contrast to the force’s press release, law enforcement sources confirmed to reporters that at least four persons were detained in connection with the unrest and remain in police custody assisting with inquiries.
Tactical patrols remain on alert across the East Coast corridor as investigators review surveillance feeds and determine their next operational steps regarding the two missing Surinamese nationals.
