CORRIVERTON, BERBICE — A 15-year-old boy is in police custody assisting detectives as the Guyana Police Force (GPF) probes the death of 55-year-old fisherman Asmat Mohamed Hussain, who died following a violent altercation in Corriverton, Corentyne, on Wednesday night.

Investigators in Regional Police Division #6 are working to establish the sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter near a local supermarket, with security camera footage across the commercial strip expected to play a central role in the investigation.

Timeline of the Fatal Altercation

According to police reports, Hussain was spending the evening relaxing with relatives and community members when he stepped away to walk toward a nearby supermarket.

Moments later, the quiet gathering was shattered when Hussain was found lying on the ground with severe, bleeding injuries:

  • Confrontation and Weapon: Witnesses informed police that Hussain and the 15-year-old boy became embroiled in a violent scuffle. During the altercation, the teenager was allegedly observed brandishing a knife before fleeing the scene.
  • Hospitalization and Death: Hussain was quickly transported by his brother to the No. 75 Village Regional Hospital, where doctors attempted emergency treatment. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care.
  • Suspect Detained: Acting on local intelligence, police located the 15-year-old suspect and placed him under arrest. He remains in custody at the Springlands Police Station as a juvenile suspect.

Grieving Relatives Seek Answers

The victim’s relatives described Hussain as a peaceful individual with no history of violent disputes, expressing shock over the sudden and tragic confrontation.

“My brother was not a violent man,” the victim’s sister, Bibi Hussain, told reporters as the family called for a thorough and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

CCTV Review and Post-Mortem Scheduled

The precise motive and initial trigger behind the altercation have not yet been established.

Detectives have secured access to several CCTV surveillance cameras affixed to commercial properties in the immediate vicinity of the supermarket. Video analysts are reviewing the recordings to reconstruct the exact timeline, determine whether an argument preceded the physical fight, and verify the actions of both individuals leading up to the stabbing.

Hussain’s body has been transferred to the hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted by a government pathologist to determine the exact cause of death as charges are considered.
