HGP Nightly News – President Irfaan Ali has held high-level talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as Guyana and the United States move to tighten coordination amid fast-moving developments in Venezuela and wider regional security concerns.
The call, disclosed in official readouts, centred on the Western Hemisphere’s political and security pressures, including democracy, regional stability, and shared security priorities.
According to Guyana’s Foreign Ministry, Ali used the engagement to underscore Guyana’s relationship with Washington as a strategic security partnership, while signalling Guyana’s willingness to work alongside U.S. authorities against transnational threats. The areas flagged included drug trafficking, gold smuggling and narco-terrorism, as Guyana continues to position itself as a frontline state for regional security cooperation.
Ali also reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to democratic norms and the rule of law, pointing to the importance of free and fair elections and regional cooperation as stabilising forces in a hemisphere facing renewed tension. The Foreign Ministry said the President welcomed U.S. leadership on shared commitments tied to freedom, democracy and regional security.
On the U.S. side, the State Department said Rubio focused on strengthening bilateral security cooperation, and the American readout reiterated continued U.S. support for Guyana, including on the protection of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides indicated they will remain engaged as issues evolve and as regional attention stays fixed on Venezuela’s unfolding situation.
