GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – Main Street Avenue was transformed into a vibrant gallery of natural beauty and cultural expression on Friday as the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport officially opened “Live Art on Main Street.” The initiative arrives as Guyana prepares for a record-breaking influx of tourists for the nation’s 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The launch coincides with a significant upward trend in tourism. Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Susan Rodriguez, recently announced that visitor arrivals in March 2026 reached 39,484—a 13.3% increase compared to the previous year. Officials expect these numbers to peak in May as international, regional, and domestic travelers descend on the capital.

Fostering Community Through Creativity

Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Steven Jacobs, underscored the project’s social importance. In an increasingly digital world, Jacobs noted that live art is vital for creating shared experiences that foster empathy and community.

“This initiative not only highlights artistic excellence but also offers the public an opportunity to engage directly with Guyana’s vibrant creative community,” Minister Jacobs stated. He emphasized that the event provides a platform for cultural appreciation, interactive experiences, and the direct promotion and sale of local artwork.

Attendees can expect a dynamic environment featuring:

  • Live Demonstrations: Artists creating pieces in real-time.
  • Artistic Expressions: A diverse showcase of Guyanese talent and styles.
  • Audience Participation: Opportunities for the public to engage with the creative process.
  • Direct Interaction: Face-to-face dialogue with local creatives and artisans.

Investment in the “Orange Economy”

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the creative industry as a pillar of national economic diversification. Minister Jacobs reminded the public that $3.7 billion has been budgeted this year specifically for projects supporting the “Orange Economy.”

According to Jacobs, creating cultural spaces such as these markets and museums is essential for giving creatives the exposure necessary to attract serious investment and build sustainable careers.

Reclaiming History

As part of the month-long festivities, the Ministry will also feature live reenactments of pivotal historical moments at various events across the city. These performances are designed to raise awareness and serve as a reminder of Guyana’s journey as a people.

As the 60th Jubilee Independence celebrations kick off, Minister Jacobs urged all Guyanese to support local artists and take full advantage of the cultural offerings available in the coming weeks.
