SURVEILLANCE TECH USED TO HUNT DOWN GAS STATION BOMBER – TOP COP

GEORGETOWN — In a stunning 48-hour turnaround, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has captured the man believed to have carried out the deadly Mobil Gas Station explosion that killed six-year-old Soraya Bourne and injured four others.

Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken announced the breakthrough on Tuesday, crediting cutting-edge surveillance technology and intelligence coordination for what he described as one of the Force’s most sophisticated operations in recent years.

The suspect, Venezuelan national Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo, was cornered and arrested during a coordinated early-morning raid at Vergenoegen Sideline Dam, East Bank Essequibo. “From the very night of the blast, our team moved with precision,” Hicken said. “Through Safe City cameras, digital tracking, and solid police work, we traced every step the suspect took before and after the explosion.”

Police say Peodomo, a Spanish-speaking foreign national, was caught on CCTV carrying a large black plastic bag near the Mobil station moments before the blast on October 26. The explosion tore through the western side of the premises, killing the child instantly, injuring four others, and shattering nearby buildings and vehicles.

The investigation, led by a Special Task Force comprising detectives from the Major Crimes Unit, CID Headquarters, and multiple regional divisions, was coordinated directly under the Commissioner’s oversight. Intelligence analysts worked around the clock to synchronize video-forensic evidence, GPS data, and eyewitness reports, creating a digital trail that led to Peodomo’s capture.

“This operation showcased the synergy between modern policing and traditional detective work,” Hicken said. “It reflects the new face of the GPF, disciplined, technologically equipped, and ready to confront acts of terror.” Peodomo is now in custody and, according to investigators, cooperating with authorities.

Several other individuals, both local and foreign, are being questioned as police probe whether the explosion was part of a broader network or a lone-wolf operation. The GPF is working closely with INTERPOL and regional counterparts to trace Peodomo’s links to cross-border gangs operating between Guyana and Venezuela. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that police are preparing charges under Sections 309A and 309B of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, which cover acts of terrorism and conspiracy to commit terrorism.

Additional charges for murder, attempted murder, arson, and malicious damage to property are being finalized pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.Commissioner Hicken, visibly firm yet composed during his statement, praised his ranks for their swift action.

“This tragedy will not go unanswered,” he said. “Our ranks have proven that we have both the skill and the resolve to bring those responsible to justice.” The investigation remains active as police continue to examine forensic evidence to determine the motive behind the attack, and whether it was the work of a larger, coordinated cell.
