STABROEK MARKET TO BE EXPANDED AS BOURDA GETS NEW COMPLEX

HGP Nightly News – The administration will expand the historic Stabroek Market while completely rebuilding the Bourda Market under a major redevelopment plan for Georgetown’s commercial hubs.

Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand said technical teams are redesigning both projects, with the Stabroek upgrade forming part of the Georgetown Restoration Initiative.

She said the goal is to restore the century-old market while adding new space without changing its historic character.

“Before the next five years the Stabroek Market will be restored and extended and Bourda Market is going to be rebuilt completely,” the Minister said.

Assessments are ongoing to determine the extent of restoration works needed at Stabroek Market and how best to accommodate additional vendors.

At Bourda Market, government has already held two rounds of consultations with vendors. The new facility is expected to feature a two-storey design to create more space.

Manickchand also announced that government will turn the sod for five new markets next week.

Meanwhile, 32 contractors have submitted bids for the rehabilitation of the East Ruimveldt Market.

Government has allocated $18 billion this year for the construction and rehabilitation of markets across the country.
