GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – Police are investigating a horrific road accident that left three people dead and another seriously injured early Saturday morning on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, in the vicinity of Loo Creek.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on August 16, 2025, when a car driven by 26-year-old Mairo Campbell of Hyde Park, Timehri, slammed into the rear of a parked motor lorry laden with wood. Campbell was travelling with three passengers: six-year-old Marenzo Campbell, 26-year-old Shelly Joseph, and 25-year-old Keiron Wells, all of Hyde Park, Timehri.
According to police, the lorry had been parked on the western side of the highway after one of its tyres blew out. Critically, no reflectors were placed behind or around the vehicle to alert approaching drivers. Investigators said Campbell’s car was heading north “at a fast rate” when it collided directly with the rear of the stationary lorry.
The impact left all four occupants of the car unconscious with severe head and body injuries. They were pulled from the wreckage by police officers and public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex. Marenzo Campbell and Keiron Wells were pronounced dead on arrival, while Shelly Joseph succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
The driver, Mairo Campbell, survived but remains hospitalised with a dislocated left foot and a displaced left eye. His condition is listed as serious but stable. Police confirmed that a breathalyser test conducted on the lorry driver showed no trace of alcohol.
However, checks revealed that he was not the holder of a valid licence to drive a motor lorry. The bodies of the deceased are at the hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.
The accident has once again raised alarm about the dangers of the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, particularly in cases where disabled vehicles are left without warning signals to other motorists.
