HGP Nightly News – PNCR/APNU Leader Aubrey Norton claims Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) President Justice Winston Anderson personally sought his support for the appointment of Guyana’s Chancellor and Chief Justice.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, Norton said Justice Anderson contacted him several times on the issue.
He claimed the discussions involved Acting Chancellor Roxane George-Wiltshire and Justice Navindra Singh.
According to Norton, Justice Anderson also discussed the retirement of then Acting Chancellor Yonette Cummings-Edwards.
Norton further alleged that Justice Anderson told him President Irfaan Ali was awaiting his agreement before proceeding with the appointments.
He said the alleged conversations raised questions about whether the CCJ President should have been involved in the process.
Norton maintained that judicial officers should remain outside political negotiations. Despite his concerns, he said he continues to support the CCJ as the region’s final court.
Norton argued that the institution should instead be strengthened and protected from political influence.
He said the CCJ remains preferable to the Privy Council, but its credibility depends on maintaining judicial independence and public confidence.
