HGP Nightly News – Attorney General Anil Nandlall has condemned attacks directed at Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) President Justice Winston Anderson, describing them as disrespectful and damaging to the judiciary.
Speaking on Issues in the News, Nandlall singled out a Facebook post by WIN regional candidate Mark Goring, who reportedly referred to Justice Anderson as a “cockroach.”
“This is a grossly disrespectful and scurrilous attack,” Nandlall said. He condemned the publication “in the strongest possible terms.”
His comments come amid controversy surrounding leaked internal correspondence involving judges of the regional court.
Nandlall pointed to a joint statement from Caribbean judicial heads expressing concern over the breach of confidentiality and reaffirming confidence in the CCJ.
He also referenced concerns raised by the Guyana Bar Association about protecting the Court’s institutional integrity.
Nandlall said people are free to criticise the Court and its decisions. However, he argued that criticism should not descend into personal attacks against judges.
He warned that conduct which scandalises the Court could undermine public confidence in the administration of justice and may, in some circumstances, amount to contempt of court.
The CCJ serves as Guyana’s final appellate court.
