Former Minister of Public Works, David Patterson, has criticized the government’s handling of the Wales Gas-to-Energy Project, stressing that had the administration heeded the parliamentary opposition’s call for a feasibility study, the project would likely have been completed by now.
Speaking on the matter, Patterson argued that the absence of such a study has directly led to the delays and hiccups currently plaguing the multibillion-dollar initiative, which was touted as a transformative project for Guyana’s energy sector.
The former minister said the government’s decision to bypass a proper feasibility assessment has left the project vulnerable to cost overruns, inefficiencies, and implementation setbacks, which are now surfacing publicly.
Patterson further maintained that robust feasibility studies are not only a best practice for major infrastructure projects but also a means of ensuring that taxpayers’ money is safeguarded through proper planning and transparent processes.
