HGP Nightly News – Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has again written President Irfaan Ali seeking the appointment of his three nominees to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
Mohamed has nominated attorneys Roysdale Forde, Siand Dhurjon and Damien Da Silva.
However, the three Opposition-nominated Commissioners currently serving at GECOM have not resigned.
They are Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman.
In his latest letter, Mohamed said he has completed the required consultations with the Parliamentary Opposition.
“Having fulfilled my Constitutional obligations, I respectfully request that Your Excellency give urgent consideration to the appointments,” he wrote.
Mohamed said previous correspondence to the President on the matter has gone unanswered.
His latest approach follows concerns raised by The Carter Center about the ongoing impasse at GECOM.
Mohamed argued that the situation could affect preparations for Local Government Elections and future electoral reforms.
APNU has maintained that no vacancies currently exist at the Commission.
The sitting Commissioners have also argued that a change in the Parliamentary Opposition does not automatically end their appointments.
Mohamed said he is consulting his legal team and could eventually approach the Court if the issue remains unresolved.
He also indicated that he intends to raise the matter with the international community.
