MINISTER SAYS COURTS EXPANSION SHOWS HOW PRIVATE INVESTMENT IS DRIVING LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

“Confidence in the West”: Minister Rodrigues Hails Courts Expansion as Catalyst for Region 3 Growth

VREED-EN-HOOP, REGION 3 — The transformation of the West Coast corridor reached a new milestone on Friday as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, officially opened the new Courts Guyana branch in Vreed-en-Hoop. The Minister declared that the multimillion-dollar investment is a “resounding vote of confidence” in Guyana’s economic trajectory, specifically highlighting the rapid commercialization of Region 3.

The opening marks the transition of the Vreed-en-Hoop location from a basic outlet into a modern, full-service superstore, bringing a premium retail experience to the residents of the West Meten-Meer-Zorg to Patentia corridor.

Strategic Growth: Not by Accident

In her feature address, the Minister emphasized that the current surge in private investment is the direct result of the government’s aggressive infrastructure agenda.

  • Infrastructure as a Magnet: The Minister noted that improvements to the West Coast road network and the impending completion of the New Demerara River Bridge are fundamentally reshaping the business environment.
  • Revitalization: “This is exactly the kind of progress we want to see—spaces being revitalized and businesses growing,” she stated, adding that the expansion reflects a deep trust in the government’s strategic vision for national development.
  • Regional Hub: With the nearby Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase and various housing developments, Region 3 is quickly becoming a primary engine for retail and industrial growth.

The Standard of Trade: Consumer Protection First

While welcoming the expansion of retail giants, the Minister issued a firm reminder that growth must not come at the expense of consumer rights.

  • Oversight Agencies: She underscored the “critical roles” played by the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) in the current economic boom.
  • Quality Mandate: As more international brands enter the market, the government is placing greater emphasis on ensuring that goods and services meet established national safety and quality standards.
  • Fair Trade: The Minister insisted that “responsible business growth” requires promoting fair trade practices and ensuring that consumers have recourse when standards are not met.

Corporate Responsibility: Beyond the Bottom Line

The Minister also lauded Unicomer (Guyana) Inc.—the parent company of Courts—for its long-standing commitment to the Guyanese social fabric.

  • Community Traditions: She specifically highlighted the annual Christmas Tree Lighting as a valued tradition that fosters community unity and brings families together.
  • Local Impact: The expansion of the Vreed-en-Hoop branch has also increased local employment, providing new career opportunities for residents in the region.

A Retail Revolution

As the scissors cut the ribbon on Friday, the message from the Ministry was clear: the government provides the framework, but the private sector provides the fuel. The transformation of the Vreed-en-Hoop “retail experience” is a snapshot of the wider Guyanese economy in 2026—modernizing, expanding, and moving westward. For the residents of Region 3, high-quality goods and services are no longer a “Georgetown-only” privilege.
