JAGDEO: ‘APNU’S GEORGETOWN STRONGHOLD CRUMBLING AS VOTES ROLL IN’

Georgetown, Guyana – September 2, 2025 – Vice President and PPP/C General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has thrown down the gauntlet, warning that the opposition APNU’s dominance in Georgetown may be slipping away as the country awaits the results of Monday’s General and Regional Elections.

Speaking after the close of polls, Jagdeo called the day “a good one” for democracy, praising the peaceful atmosphere while urging patience. But his words carried a sharper edge when he turned his attention to the numbers trickling in.

“The trend is… APNU will have a very difficult night,” Jagdeo declared. “Their traditional support base is splintering — some going to the PPP, some to WIN, and some staying with them. They will never end tonight with that big margin of 50,000 votes more than the PPP in the city.”

It was a stinging forecast, aimed directly at APNU’s Georgetown fortress. For decades, the capital has been a bastion of opposition strength. But Jagdeo suggested that fortress now shows cracks — evidence, he argued, that voters are weary of the old politics and looking for alternatives.

At the same time, Jagdeo tempered his prediction with a plea for calm. “Be patient,” he urged PPP/C supporters and Guyanese at large. “Victory will be sealed at the ballot box, not by rumor or rush.”

The PPP/C leader also drew a pointed contrast with the bitter 2020 elections, when results dragged on for five months amid accusations of fraud and international scrutiny. This time, he said, the process would be swift. “By Tuesday, I expect all of the SOPs to be uploaded, and then every Guyanese will know the result of the elections.”

While acknowledging challenges such as inadequate infrastructure for elderly and disabled voters, Jagdeo stressed that “every Guyanese who wanted to exercise their franchise could have done so today in a peaceful manner.”

Still, his message was clear: the PPP/C believes the tide has turned, even in APNU’s own backyard. “APNU supporters are going to go three ways,” he said confidently. “And that party will have some serious introspection to do.”

For now, though, Jagdeo insists patience is the watchword. The votes are cast. The numbers are coming. And, if his forecast holds true, APNU’s grip on Georgetown may soon be history.
