From the debut of the Elite League Cup to regional squash dominance, here is your weekend sports update.


Football: GFF Launches 2026 Elite League Cup

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has officially unveiled the 2026 Elite League Cup, a high-stakes three-week tournament designed to professionalize the domestic calendar. Running from February 14 to March 7 at the National Training Centre in Providence, the competition features nine top-tier clubs divided into three pools.

The Group Draw:

  • Group A: Slingerz FC (headline), Monedderlust FC, Ann’s Grove United FC
  • Group B: Guyana Police Force FC, Santos FC, Den Amstel FC
  • Group C: Guyana Defence Force FC, Western Tigers FC, Fruta Conquerors FC

The tournament serves as a bridge to a new August-to-April season structure, intended to align Guyanese football with FIFA’s international transfer windows.

Golf: Aperol Spritz Tournament Tees Off Sunday

Action returns to the Lusignan Golf Club this Sunday, February 8, for the ANSA McAL Aperol Spritz Tournament. The 18-hole individual competition will award prizes for the top three net scores, best gross score, and specialized challenges, including “Nearest to the Flag” (Hole 4) and “Longest Drive” (Hole 5). Brand Manager Kristoff Stoll officially handed over the sponsorship cheque to LGC PRO Dr. Joaan Deo earlier today, signaling a refreshed partnership for the 2026 season.


Squash: Khalil and Top Seeds Dominate BCQS Masters

On Day 2 of the BCQS Masters Tournament at the Georgetown Club, Guyanese players continued their commanding run against regional competitors. Top seed Jason-Ray Khalil delivered a masterclass in the Men’s 30–44 division, defeating Jonathan Antczak (11-1, 11-2, 11-3).

Other Notable Day 2 Results:

  • Alex Arjoon secured a straight-games victory over Peter de Groot.
  • Robert Cameron recorded two wins, overcoming Reagan Rodrigues and Steven Xavier.
  • Regional Stars: Barbados’ Shawn Simpson maintained pace by defeating Jason van Dijk. The tournament concludes tonight with final-round matches across all age categories.

Cricket: West Indies Open T20 World Cup Campaign

The West Indies commence their pursuit of a record third title tonight against Scotland at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Led by Shai Hope, the 15-member squad features a record-breaking six Guyanese players:

  • Sherfane Rutherford (Batsman)

The “Mining Town” celebrates a historic milestone today, February 7, with the official grand opening of the Bayrock National Stadium in Wismar. The multipurpose facility, which features a new synthetic track, will be commissioned by government officials following a massive infrastructure blitz.
