Venezuela – Maduro Accuses US of Seeking Regime Change
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Monday accused the United States of pursuing regime change in his country through an increased naval deployment in the southern Caribbean.
US officials say the buildup is aimed at dismantling Latin American drug cartels, a key pillar of President Donald Trump’s anti-narcotics and border security strategy.
But Maduro, alongside senior officials including Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, told journalists the buildup represents a direct military threat to Venezuela, claiming it is an attempt to justify external intervention.
Jamaica – Murders Spike Despite Overall Crime Decline
Jamaica last week recorded 23 murders between August 23–30, a sharp increase compared to prior weeks of single-digit homicides.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s serious crime statistics, the country’s 2025 murder count now stands at 459, a 42% year-on-year decline.
Despite last week’s surge, overall crime is down 16%, a figure that has become a major talking point on the campaign trail ahead of Jamaica’s September 3 general election.
Dominica – Landmark Geothermal Energy Project Reaches Financial Close
The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has finalized financing for the Dominica Geothermal Energy 10 MW project, a landmark clean energy initiative.
The project is being executed by the Geothermal Power Company of Dominica (GPC), a subsidiary of international developer Ormat Technologies Inc.
CDB Vice President of Operations Isaac Solomon described the deal as a “pivotal transaction” for the region, showcasing how blended concessional finance can leverage private sector expertise to deliver transformative renewable energy solutions for small island states.
