Barbados PM Mia Mottley Confirms She Will Lead BLP Into Next Election Amid Global Challenges

By Dacia Richards | HGP Regional News

Bridgetown, Barbados โ€“ In a surprise announcement on Saturday night, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley declared her intent to lead the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) into the next general elections, reversing earlier plans to exit after two terms in office.

Mottley announced a celebration rally held to mark two milestones: the BLPโ€™s victory in the St. James North by-election and the anniversary of the partyโ€™s historic 2018 landslide win. The Prime Minister cited persistent global and national disruptionsโ€”from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change, artificial intelligence, and regional instabilityโ€”as critical factors in her decision.

โ€œBarbados must be ready to face these challenges head-on,โ€ she told supporters.

Mottley, 59, acknowledged the emotional weight of her decision, referencing the groundswell of public appeals urging her to stay on. She said those calls intensified during the recent by-election campaign.
