CXC Sets Clear Guidelines for AI Use in School-Based Assessments

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS โ€“ The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has reaffirmed its commitment to academic integrity while acknowledging the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. Dr. Nicole Manning, Director of Operations, addressed the region on Monday to provide reassurance to students and educators regarding the moderation of School-Based Assessments (SBAs).

CXCโ€™s approach is rooted in the belief that AI can be a helpful tool for brainstorming, explaining difficult terms, or generating structural suggestions. However, the Council has established strict protocols to prevent academic dishonesty:

  • Human Judgment: AI detection software will not be the sole basis for grading. CXC will rely heavily on the teacher-student relationship and the observation of a studentโ€™s work over time.
  • Mandatory Disclosure: If AI is used in any form, students must submit a required disclosure form and an originality report, properly citing all AI-generated assistance.
  • Academic Dishonesty: Submitting work generated significantly or wholly by AI is considered an irregularity and will be handled under strict academic misconduct procedures.

Dr. Manning urged educators to have honest conversations with students about the ethical use of technology, emphasizing that integrity matters far beyond the examination room.

INTERNATIONAL: US Inflation Hits 3.8% as Iran Conflict Drives Up Energy Costs

WASHINGTON D.C. โ€“ Inflation in the United States accelerated in April at its fastest pace since May 2023, hitting 3.8%. The surge is being driven largely by the escalating conflict in Iran, which has severely disrupted global energy markets and essential shipping routes.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nearly half of the increase was fueled by surging energy costs. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent oil prices skyrocketing, pushing the US national average for a gallon of unleaded gas to $4.50โ€”the highest level seen since mid-2022.

Political and Economic Pressures

The spike comes at a pivotal moment for the Trump administration. Kevin Warsh is set to succeed Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve in a matter of days, entering the role with very “little room for maneuver.” While President Trump has pressured the central bank to cut interest rates to spur economic growth, the current inflationary climate may force a more conservative fiscal approach.

With midterm elections looming in November, the rising cost of groceries, housing, and airfare poses a significant challenge for the Republican platform, which was largely built on a campaign promise to slash inflation.
