“Upskill Now”: Finance Minister Singh Outlines Guyana’s Industrial Future Powered by Gas-to-Energy

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh has issued a clarion call to the nation’s youth, urging them to aggressively pursue technical skills as Guyana pivots toward a massive industrial expansion. Speaking on the country’s economic trajectory, Dr. Singh emphasized that the Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project at Wales is not just about cheaper electricity—it is the catalyst for an industrial revolution that will fundamentally change the Guyanese job market.

As the government moves closer to operationalizing the Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) plant, the Minister warned that the window to “get ready” is now.

The Wales Industrial Nexus

Dr. Singh explained that the energy generated at the Wales Development Zone will serve as the backbone for several heavy and high-tech industries that were previously impossible in Guyana due to high power costs.

  • NGL and Fertilizer: The facility will allow Guyana to launch its own Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) plant and enter the fertilizer manufacturing market, a strategic move for a nation with deep agricultural roots.
  • Manufacturing Surge: Lower energy costs are expected to attract diverse manufacturing firms, shifting Guyana from a raw material exporter to a value-added producer.
  • Data Centers: In a significant digital push, the Minister revealed that Guyana is positioning itself as a destination for regional data centers, supported by a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with C-BAS.

Opportunities Beyond the Corporate Office

Dr. Singh was quick to point out that this “New Economy” is not just for executives and scientists. He broke down the sectors where Guyanese entrepreneurs and workers can find immediate traction:

  1. Logistics & Transportation: The Minister demystified the word “logistics,” noting it translates to real opportunities for truck drivers, fleet owners, and operators of boats and barges.
  2. Engineering & Energy: Massive demand for technicians and engineers to maintain the GtE infrastructure.
  3. Technology: Roles in managing the nation’s first generation of data centers and digital infrastructure.
  4. Business Support: An increased need for accounting, legal, and administrative services to support new industrial tenants.

The Advice to Youth: Prepare or Be Left Behind

The Minister’s central message was one of individual responsibility. While the government creates the framework, he stressed that citizens must be the ones to fill the roles.

“I would advise every single Guyanese person, particularly young people: get the skills now. Upskill yourself now.”

The government continues to pitch the Gas-to-Energy project as the “master key” to Guyana’s development strategy, aimed at slashing energy costs by 50%, attracting multi-billion dollar investments, and ensuring the country’s economic stability remains independent of fluctuating global oil prices.

A Strategic Pivot

With the global eyes on Guyana’s offshore oil, Dr. Singh’s focus on the onshore industrial phase signals a shift toward long-term sustainability. By lowering the cost of energy, the administration hopes to create a “virtuous cycle” where cheap power leads to more jobs, which leads to a more skilled workforce, ultimately cementing Guyana as the industrial heart of the Caribbean.
