As Guyana observes Month of the Elderly, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, is calling on families to show greater care, compassion, and respect for senior citizens, amid growing reports of neglect and abandonment.
In a recent interview, Dr. Persaud voiced concern about the troubling trend of elderly persons being deserted after transferring ownership of their properties to relatives.
“We see a lot of dumping of seniors, whether at the hospitals or at any of our institutions,” the Minister lamented. “If you know you can’t care for your parent, come and talk to us and let’s find a good solution — don’t dump them on the road.”
The Minister explained that her ministry maintains a strong coordinated system with the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to ensure that elderly persons in need receive care and medical support.
“We have been doing this at the Night Shelter, where many indigent and homeless seniors come for assistance,” Dr. Persaud said. “They’ve been receiving surgeries, regular eye care, and access to infectious and dental units.”
Beyond providing shelter and healthcare, Dr. Persaud urged elderly citizens to take legal steps to protect their property and rights as they age.
“Don’t sign over your property — stay in your house, live there, and make a will,” she advised. “We must promote will-making so that people are not left vulnerable.”
The Minister reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to advancing elder care, protection, and empowerment, emphasizing that the Month of the Elderly should be a time for reflection and action.
She encouraged families to honor the sacrifices of older generations, ensuring that every senior citizen lives with dignity, safety, and peace of mind.
