Georgetown, Guyana – September 11, 2025 – The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has been thrust into the spotlight after a disturbing video surfaced online showing a patient in the Emergency Department in a vulnerable state while receiving care. The hospital has confirmed that the matter is now under active police investigation.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the GPHC said it immediately launched an internal probe once the footage began circulating on social media. The investigation identified a suspect, an orthopaedic technician, who was not on duty at the time of the incident. The case has since been referred to the Guyana Police Force to be pursued under cybercrime laws.
The hospital stressed that recording or photographing patients inside its facility is strictly prohibited without management approval, noting that the breach not only violated hospital policy but also professional ethics and the fundamental trust between patients and caregivers.
“We deeply regret this incident and extend our sincerest apologies to the patient and her relatives,” the statement read. “Safeguarding the dignity, privacy, and well-being of our patients remains our highest priority, and we will continue to take all necessary measures to uphold these standards.”
The leak has sparked outrage from members of the public, many of whom have raised concerns about patient safety and privacy in Guyana’s leading public health institution. Advocates have called for tougher oversight and stronger disciplinary action to prevent similar incidents.
As the investigation moves forward, the hospital said it remains committed to ensuring accountability and reinforcing its protocols, reminding both staff and visitors that any breach of confidentiality will not be tolerated.
