Georgetown, Guyana – August 28, 2025 – With just days before Monday’s General and Regional Elections, People’s National Congress (PNC)-nominated Commissioners staged a walkout from a meeting of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), effectively halting discussions on key election matters.
PPP/Civic-nominated Commissioner Sase Gunraj confirmed the disruption in a statement posted to his official Facebook page. “PNC Commissioners have staged a walkout from GECOM, thereby rendering the Commission unable to discuss several matters pertinent to Monday’s elections,” Gunraj wrote.
The walkout left the Commission unable to advance preparations on issues critical to the upcoming polls, though the details of the agenda items were not disclosed. This is not the first time the PNC has employed such a tactic.
The party has drawn sharp criticism in the past for using walkouts to stall official proceedings, a move opponents argue undermines the effectiveness of GECOM in carrying out its mandate.
The development has fueled concerns about whether the Commission will be able to resolve outstanding matters ahead of one of the most closely watched elections in recent history.
