GCCI SLAMS PARTIES FOR ATTEMPTS TO DESTABILISE ELECTIONS

Georgetown, Guyana – August 26, 2025 – The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has condemned what it described as reckless attempts by political parties to stir instability during the 2025 General and Regional Elections (GRE).

In a statement on Tuesday, the Chamber said it was “deeply concerned” about claims from some contesting parties that they had already won in certain regions, even though ballots from the Joint Services, the first set of votes to be cast, were still to be tabulated.

The GCCI also pointed to public declarations by candidates alleging possible interference in the results and even expressing willingness to support “extreme actions” if their suspicions were realized.

As an accredited observer of the elections, the Chamber said such rhetoric undermines public trust and risks plunging the country into uncertainty. “The successful execution of a national election is the fundamental tenet of a democratic country,” the statement read. “Any self-serving attempt to usurp the electoral process must be met with strong condemnation and legal action, where necessary.”

The Chamber urged all political parties to maintain peace and to respect the democratic process, warning that incendiary statements could destabilize the country at a critical time.

It reaffirmed its call for free, fair, and transparent elections accompanied by timely results, pledging to continue monitoring developments closely.
