DR. RAMAYYA QUITS WIN PARTY; HIS FOURTH POLITICAL DEPARTURE IN RECENT YEARS

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – Berbice-based politician Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya has resigned from the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, citing internal harassment, public insults, and a lack of inclusion in party activities. His resignation marks the latest in a long line of political withdrawals spanning multiple parties over the past decade.

In a live video posted to his social media page on Wednesday evening, Ramayya said he was mistreated by members of WIN, the party led by US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed.

According to Ramayya, voice notes were circulated within the party in which he and his family were verbally attacked. “I feel that I am not comfortable with the way that I was treated. People within the WIN delegation sent voice notes. They cursed me and cursed my mother and everybody [in my family],” Ramayya stated.

“I am not going to apologise for leaving the WIN party and have no intention to affiliate myself with any party at this stage. ”He suggested the tension stemmed from his refusal to publicly criticise President Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), with whom he previously had close ties. “I know President Ali from 2011 in Parliament; he was very kind and good to me.

In fact, all of them in the PPP camp were kind to me. He offered me his house, he offered me a place to stay. So how can I be ungrateful? He’s the President,” Ramayya said.

Ramayya also claimed he was sidelined within WIN, noting that he was not informed of the party’s office opening in Whim, Berbice, nor was he invited to Nomination Day activities earlier this week.

“A few weeks ago I pledged my support to the WIN party because of the things he [Mohamed] was doing. [However]…without any apology I will not continue or function in any political party. I don’t want to be a victim of any movement,” he said.

Ramayya’s departure from WIN is the fourth major political exit of his career. He first entered mainstream politics as a member of the Alliance For Change (AFC), where he served as a Member of Parliament.

Following the 2015 general elections, he was appointed Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six under the APNU+AFC coalition government.

He resigned from that post in 2016, citing differences with the administration. He later crossed the political aisle and publicly endorsed the PPPC, where he was appointed as Coordinator of the Region Six Rapid Response Taskforce.

He resigned from that post earlier this year before aligning himself with the WIN party — a relationship that has now ended less than two months later.

While Ramayya has stated that he intends to remain politically unaffiliated for the time being, his long and shifting political history has raised questions about the consistency and durability of his affiliations.
