WIN PARTY DEMANDS IMMEDIATE ELECTION OF OPPOSITION LEADER AFTER MPs SWORN IN

GEORGETOWN – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party is calling for the immediate election of a Leader of the Opposition, saying there is no justification for delay now that all Members of Parliament have been sworn in. The party’s leader, Azruddin Mohamed, made the formal request in a letter to Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, with a copy sent to Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Isaacs.

In the correspondence, Mohamed urged that the process to elect the Opposition Leader begin without hesitation. He noted that the President’s recent announcement on the convening of the 13th Parliament sets the stage for the full resumption of parliamentary business and that selecting an Opposition Leader is a key step in ensuring effective governance and accountability.

“The WIN Party stands ready to participate fully in the democratic process to ensure the prompt election of the Opposition Leader,” Mohamed wrote, emphasizing his party’s commitment to stability and progress within the legislative branch.

The letter also calls on the Speaker to convene a meeting to facilitate the election, signaling the WIN Party’s intention to play an active and decisive role in shaping the tone and direction of the new parliamentary term.

With Parliament officially in session and MPs now sworn in, the WIN Party’s push reflects growing impatience among sections of the political landscape for the Opposition to organize itself and resume its constitutional role. For Mohamed and his party, the message is clear: the time for ceremony is over, Guyana’s Parliament must get back to work.
