UNLICENSED TRUCK DRIVER HELD AFTER BRIDGE CRASH KILLS 24-YEAR-OLD SCOTT DORWART

HGP Nightly News – Police say a 23-year-old man who was driving without a licence is in custody, after a chain-reaction crash on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge left Scott Dorwart, 24, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, dead. The fatal accident occurred on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at about 09:45 hrs on the southern carriageway of the bridge.

According to preliminary investigations, motor lorry GAC 296, driven by the 23-year-old from Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was travelling west along the northern driving lane of the southern carriageway when it reportedly suffered mechanical failure, came to a stop, and then rolled backwards into vehicles behind it.

Police said the rollback triggered a series of collisions involving multiple vehicles: GAC 296; minibus GSS 1249; motor car PAC 372 (driven by Dorwart); motorcycle CM 335; motor pickup PAL 3390; and motor car PXX 4240.Dorwart and one occupant, a 23-year-old male of Anna Catherina, sustained injuries in the collisions.

Dorwart was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor on duty, while the injured occupant was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains under medical care.

Police said a breathalyser test on the truck driver recorded .003 micrograms, below the legal limit of 30 micrograms. The driver and the truck’s owner, a 55-year-old man of Anna Catherina, are both in police custody as the investigation continues.

Dorwart’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
