TWO REMANDED AND JUVENILE DETENTION FOR TEEN ORDERED IN DEADLY EAST CANJE ROBBERY

HGP Nightly News – A teenager and two adult men have been ordered into custody after appearing before the court in connection with the murder of 61-year-old Chinese national Chen Yongping, who was killed during a robbery at his home in Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.

The accused, Pieter Baker, a 29-year-old pump operator of the Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme; Colwin Morris, a 29-year-old labourer of Cumberland, East Canje; and a 17-year-old male, were brought before Magistrate Michelle Matthias on Tuesday at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.

Because the matter involves a charge of murder, the defendants were not required to enter pleas at this stage of the proceedings. At the conclusion of the hearing, Baker and Morris were remanded to prison, while the 17-year-old was remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre.

The case has been adjourned to January 14, as investigations continue and prosecutors prepare for the next phase of the proceedings. The killing of Chen Yongping during a robbery at his East Canje home has drawn wide attention, particularly due to the involvement of a minor, and continues to fuel public concern about violent crime in the region.
