GEORGETOWN – Opposition MP Ganesh Mahipaul has sharply criticised the ongoing Stabroek Market Square “beautification project,” accusing the Ministry of Local Government and the Office of the First Lady of pushing ahead without proper communication or respect for the vendors who depend on the location to make a daily living.
Mahipaul acknowledged that the concept of the enhancement was previously presented to the Mayor and City Council, but he said the Government failed to provide crucial details about how the project would unfold, whether vendors would be temporarily relocated, and what support would be offered.
“No meaningful consultation was conducted with the many ordinary Guyanese who earn their livelihood in this space,” Mahipaul argued, adding that development cannot come at the expense of vulnerable families.
He stressed that APNU does not oppose modernization of the capital city, but said the process must be grounded in transparency and compassion. “Good governance means engaging people, not displacing them; uplifting families, not disrupting their ability to provide for themselves,” he told reporters.
The MP called for an immediate pause on any work that disrupts vending, and issued three demands:
• Full consultation with all affected vendors
• Clear disclosure of project timelines and phases
• Consensus-based decision-making before further construction continues
“These citizens do not have access to the resources of the State to feed, clothe, and shelter their families. They depend on their daily earnings to survive,” Mahipaul said, warning that confusion and mixed messaging have created unnecessary panic.
APNU reaffirmed that it will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of those whose livelihoods are tied to Stabroek Square, urging the Government to treat every stakeholder with fairness as the capital undergoes transformation.
