In a major infrastructure announcement during a community outreach in Lima, President Dr. Irfaan Ali revealed that the government will construct a modern four-lane highway along the Essequibo Coast to ease rising traffic congestion and drive economic growth in Region Two.

“We are now working on a plan to expand the road into a four-lane highway… so you will have your modern, state-of-the-art four-lane highway right here in Essequibo,” the President stated.

The new highway will upgrade the main transportation corridor, significantly improving access for thousands of commuters and businesses. The move comes amid increased traffic volume tied to growing population and commercial activity in the region.

President Ali also disclosed additional plans to boost hinterland connectivity, linking coastal and interior regions more efficiently. Among the projects mentioned were:

  • Upgrades to the Sand Hill Trail
  • Improved road networks from Parika and Timehri
  • Enhanced links between interior and coastal economies

“We are building out the connectivity in the interior… connecting your region and economy in a more integrated way with the rest of the country,” President Ali told residents.

According to the President, the highway expansion and road development will help lower transportation costs, stimulate job creation, and improve quality of life for families — from schoolchildren to the elderly.

These initiatives form part of a broader national infrastructure agenda designed to position Guyana as a modern, connected state, capable of supporting its rapidly growing economy.
