Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has highlighted what he described as significant achievements within his ministry over the past year, expressing strong optimism about the opportunities and transformative projects planned for the next five years.

Speaking during his year-end review, Minister Edghill underscored ongoing infrastructural works aimed at improving connectivity, safety, and economic activity across the country, particularly in hinterland and rural communities.

One of the key areas highlighted was aviation infrastructure. The minister noted that major upgrades are underway at several hinterland airstrips, including Machu’s Ridge, where construction is ongoing to extend the runway to approximately 2,500 feet. He explained that these upgrades are expected to enhance access, boost tourism, and stimulate commercial activity in remote regions.

Minister Edghill stressed that infrastructure development is not pursued in isolation, but rather as part of an integrated national strategy that affects every aspect of citizens’ daily lives. He emphasized that roads, bridges, airstrips, and transportation networks are all interconnected and central to Guyana’s broader development agenda.

According to the minister, the Ministry of Public Works remains committed to ensuring that all projects meet the required standards and specifications. He explained that initiatives such as geometric road improvements, the installation of traffic signals, road widening, and enhanced street lighting are not merely construction projects, but deliberate interventions designed to improve public safety and security.

“These works are directly tied to improving the safety, well-being, and quality of life of citizens,” the minister noted, adding that infrastructure plays a critical role in reducing accidents, improving mobility, and supporting economic growth.

Looking ahead, Minister Edghill said his ministry is enthusiastic about the next phase of development, with several major projects planned over the coming five years. He described the future as promising, driven by strategic investments in transportation, public infrastructure, and connectivity that will support Guyana’s expanding economy and growing population.

The minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to using infrastructure as a catalyst for national development, ensuring that progress is inclusive and benefits communities across all regions of the country.
