PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER THREATENS CONTRACT TERMINATIONS IN REGION SIX

HGP Nightly News – Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill has issued a sharp ultimatum to contractors with outstanding community road works in Region Six, warning that contracts will be terminated if projects are not completed within newly imposed deadlines.

Edghill delivered the warning on Wednesday during an engagement with contractors and engineers attached to several concrete road projects across the region, with particular attention on Black Bush Polder, where he said residents have waited too long for delayed works to be wrapped up.

“We want to wrap up everything in Black Bush Polder within the next two weeks,” the minister said, laying out a compressed schedule for contractors who are behind. According to Edghill, some contractors have only days to complete their assignments.

“Some have until the end of this week, some have until Monday, and some have until next Friday to finish up their projects, and if they don’t finish it, we will simply get performing contractors to go in and finish it,” he warned.

The minister argued that prolonged delays are punishing residents who have been forced to live around unfinished construction zones and disrupted access routes. “We cannot be an encumbrance to residents while people’s patience allows us to go into communities and work. Even patience has an expiry date,” Edghill said.

“We have got to get on with this. We have got to get this done quickly.” He also pressed contractors working on access roads and bridge alignments to increase their pace, stressing that timelines must match the scale of the government’s infrastructure rollout in Berbice.

Edghill reiterated that the administration intends to continue expanding development in the county, but signalled that delivery, not announcements, will be the standard moving forward.
