PRESIDENT ALI CALLS FOR END TO IRAN-ISRAEL CONFLICT

President Ali Urges Diplomacy Over Destruction Amid Escalating Middle East Crisis

Georgetown, Guyana – Speaking during the 77th Commemoration of Enmore Martyrs Day, President Irfaan Ali delivered a powerful message condemning the rising global conflict between Israel and Iran, urging both nations to embrace diplomacy instead of warfare.

“We cannot be killing each other with the aim to negotiate towards peace. We cannot create destruction toward negotiations for peace,” President Ali stated. “We must negotiate for peace to avoid destruction.”

The Guyanese head of state highlighted the devastating humanitarian and economic impacts of the ongoing five-day conflict, stressing that the ripple effects are already being felt worldwide.

“The price of fuel has already increased by more than 8% since the war began. More than 30 million people are now at risk of chronic hunger due to global instability,” President Ali noted, referencing the knock-on effects for vulnerable economies like Guyana.

Guyana’s UN Ambassador Denounces Israeli Attack

Earlier this week, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, expressed deep concern during a UN Security Council meeting regarding Israel’s preemptive strike on Iranian facilities. The attack reportedly led to significant civilian casualties and sparked retaliatory drone strikes by Iran.

“Israel’s latest attack on Iran contravenes the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter,” Rodrigues-Birkett said, warning that such escalations risk plunging the entire Middle East into deeper turmoil.

She called for maximum restraint and urged all parties to respect international law, citing the importance of safeguarding global peace and security during this volatile period.

Operation Rising Lion and the Mounting Toll

The conflict intensified on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a massive air campaign involving over 200 warplanes targeting more than 100 sites across Iran, including nuclear and military installations.

Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles and drone strikes on Israeli cities. The result has been a deadly standoff, with mounting military and civilian casualties reported on both sides.

A Call for Peace

President Ali reiterated Guyana’s unwavering support for peace, calling on the international community to play a more active role in conflict resolution.

“This is not only about geopolitics. It is about real lives, real futures, and global responsibility,” he concluded.
