In a pre-dawn walkthrough and engagement on Tuesday morning, President Dr. Irfaan Ali pledged a series of transformative upgrades to the Good Fortune fishing area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of fisher folk across Guyana.

Speaking directly to workers in the community, President Ali emphasized the importance of creating safer, more functional environments for those who work long hours at sea.

“You guys work at night, in the day—so we’re putting up lights and building proper walkways right to the boats,” he assured the fishermen gathered.

Among the initiatives announced:

  • Installation of lighting and structured walkways to enhance safety and ease of access
  • A dedicated space for both retail and wholesale fish sales, increasing market access and income generation
  • Security upgrades and improved utilities to support daily operations
  • Immediate commencement of site clearing and development, with close monitoring for quality and timely execution

In a further push for diversification, President Ali encouraged the fishing community to identify suitable land for aquaculture ventures, including prawn, crab, and shrimp farming. To support this, the government has committed to funding processing and cold storage facilities, which help preserve the quality of the catch and open up new export opportunities.

“We want to increase the value of your catch and reduce spoilage,” the President said.

This initiative falls under a broader national effort to modernize Guyana’s fisheries sector and stimulate growth in the agro-processing sector.
