The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has intensified security patrols and surveillance around critical public areas and fuel stations following a series of alarming incidents involving explosive devices, including last week’s attack at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent Street.
Police detained a man on Sunday after he was observed acting suspiciously at three gas stations while carrying two bulky bags.
According to reliable sources, the man—seen wearing a flower-patterned bag and a black haversack—was first spotted entering the Mobil Gas Station at Vlissengen Road around 17:53 hrs.
He was later seen at KFC, the Rubis Gas Station, and Wendy’s, before attempting to enter Royal Castle, but instead walked into Popeyes.
Given the recent explosion at Mobil on Regent Street, police are treating this matter with heightened caution.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to HGPTV Nightly News on Monday that the suspect remains in custody as investigators review surveillance footage to trace his movements and determine whether he was acting alone or with accomplices.
“Investigators are carefully examining CCTV footage to ascertain where the suspect came from and whether he was working with anyone else,” Blanhum said.
Meanwhile, another Spanish-speaking man was reported acting suspiciously at the Supreme Court compound on October 31.
He was dressed in blue pants, a blue jersey, white Nike boots, a cream cap, and black shades, carrying a cream haversack with black and white straps.
The man reportedly told a police constable that he was “there to check out the court,” and was allowed to sit outside the Deeds Registry Office. Minutes later, when approached by private security officers for questioning, he abruptly exited the compound through the Charlotte Street entrance.
In light of these incidents, the Guyana Police Force is urging all citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activity, persons, or objects seen in their communities or public spaces.
“We call on every resident to play their part in maintaining national security. If you see something, say something,” the GPF advised in a statement.
The investigations remain ongoing.
