GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Spoken word is finding a new home in Guyana. This Saturday, April 25, 2026, the Boulevard Cafe at Giftland Mall will transform into a sanctuary for the nation’s leading and aspiring wordsmiths. Organized by well-known comedian and actor Mark Kazim in partnership with GT Gimmicks, the “Poetry Slam 2026” aims to fill a long-standing void in the local creative landscape.

Giving a Stage to the Voiceless

In an exclusive interview with Nightly News, Kazim explained that the initiative was born out of a lack of dedicated spaces for Guyanese poets to showcase their craft.

  • The Vision: “Nothing was happening when it comes to poetry in Guyana… We have so many good poets, but they’re not getting a stage,” Kazim shared. He noted that the slam is designed to be a “haven” where artists can share their stories without judgment.
  • Monthly Residency: This is not a one-time affair. Kazim clarified that the event is scheduled for the last Saturday of every month, ensuring a consistent platform for the creative community.

The Lineup: Seasoned Giants and New Voices

The slam promises a blend of established literary figures and “novice” poets, celebrating the unique nuances of Guyanese culture.

  • Featured Performers: Patrons can expect performances from notable names such as Ka, Nathaniel Powers, Michelle Henry, Mark Edwards, and Randolph Critchlow.
  • Open Mic Segment: In the spirit of inclusivity, the event will feature an open mic portion, encouraging anyone in the audience to step up and “just be creative.”

An Unforgettable Weekend

For Mark Kazim, the goal is simple: to create a nurturing environment where local voices can resonate and inspire. Whether you are a die-hard fan of the spoken word or a brand-new poet looking for your first audience, the Boulevard Cafe is the place to be this Saturday night.

Tickets are priced at $3,000 and can be purchased at the door. For more information, interested parties can contact the organizers at 664-8883.
