Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill provided an update on the ongoing $1.3 billion rehabilitation project along the Diamond to Good Success public road in East Bank Demerara on Tuesday. During a site visit, the minister announced new traffic regulations aimed at expediting completion while ensuring safety and minimizing congestion.
Effective immediately, only trucks and articulated vehicles carrying heavy loads will be permitted to use the main carriageway that is undergoing rehabilitation. Smaller vehicles, including cars, buses, and SUVs, are now required to use the bypass routes established through Heroes Highway.
“We want to start diverting the traffic. This carriageway must be finished. This isn’t going to be forever—we want to get it wrapped up as fast as possible,” Minister Edghill stated.
He emphasized that the necessary systems and alternative routes were planned and put in place well in advance of construction to ease the burden on commuters and allow uninterrupted progress.
Traffic Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police Mahendra Singh, who accompanied the minister, acknowledged the tremendous growth in vehicle registration—with thousands added every three months—leading to increased congestion along the East Bank corridor.
“As limited as we are, we will do what is required. But before enforcement begins, signage must be properly in place to guide road users on rerouting options,” Singh assured.
Meanwhile, Colin Gittens, Head of the Ministry’s Special Projects Unit, reported that works are currently between 4 to 5 percent complete but are progressing steadily.
“We’ve designed the road in such a way that it will accommodate heavier loads once complete,” Gittens noted.
The ministry continues to urge commuters to adhere to diversion signage and cooperate with authorities to minimize delays and facilitate the safe and timely completion of the project.
