Georgetown, Guyana – September 2, 2025 – Guyana’s elections earned high marks from international observers Monday, with the Organization of American States (OAS) hailing the day as “peaceful, disciplined, and orderly.” Chief Observer Bruce Golding, former Prime Minister of Jamaica, said both voters and election officials deserve congratulations for their conduct.
Golding, who visited more than 60 polling stations from early morning, said he was “particularly impressed” by the professionalism of Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) staff. “They knew what they were doing, and they were not hesitant in applying the rules and guidelines,” he told reporters at Queenstown, Georgetown. He also noted the special care shown to differently abled and vulnerable voters, describing it as a clear sign of preparedness and training.
The OAS, whose mission continued into the evening to monitor counting and tabulation, stressed that the credibility of the process rests on keeping order through this next stage. Golding expressed confidence that Guyana would avoid the chaos that marred Region Four’s tabulation in 2020. “I don’t anticipate a reoccurrence of that problem. There have been amendments to the regulations regarding the tabulation process, and I expect that the tabulation will proceed smoothly,” he said.
By the close of polls at 18:00 hrs, the OAS reported no major incidents across the country. Golding called the day a proud moment for the nation, urging all stakeholders to match the discipline shown at the polls with respect for the results once declared.
