ECCLES, EAST BANK DEMERARA — In a strategic pivot toward preventative medicine, the Ministry of Health has officially commissioned the Eccles Wellness Centre. As the first facility of its kind in Guyana, the centre is specifically designed to prioritize the health of the nation’s healthcare workers, serving as a pilot program to transform Guyana’s medical culture from reactive treatment to proactive wellness.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, during the opening ceremony on Friday, March 6, 2026, underscored that the traditional model of “waiting for patients to get sick” is no longer sustainable for a modernizing nation.
A New Concept: Preventative Staff Care
The Eccles Wellness Centre will initially function as a specialized hub for Ministry of Health staff, offering a suite of services aimed at early detection and lifestyle management.
- Routine Screenings: Regular checks for blood pressure, glucose levels, and cholesterol to catch chronic diseases in their infancy.
- Lifestyle Counseling: Professional guidance on stress management and physical activity tailored to the demanding schedules of medical professionals.
- Early Detection: Utilizing diagnostic tools to identify potential health risks before they require hospital-level intervention.
Addressing the “Sick Care” Traditional Model
Dr. Anthony pointed out that Guyana’s health system has historically been “poised to get patients”—meaning the infrastructure only engages with citizens once they are already unwell.
“We want to change that concept and we want to keep people healthier so that they avoid getting sick to come to use the institutions. Traditionally, our sector has been providing ‘sick care.’ We want to provide ‘well care’.” — Minister Frank Anthony
Targeting Men’s Health and Diet
The Minister highlighted specific cultural hurdles that the new wellness initiative aims to overcome:
- The “Men’s Health” Gap: Dr. Anthony noted that Guyanese men, in particular, tend to avoid routine medical visits, often only seeking help when a condition has reached a critical or irreversible stage.
- Nutritional Education: A core component of the centre’s mission will be re-educating staff on diet. The Minister advocated for:
- Plant-Based Foods: Increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, and legumes.
- Portion Control: Teaching individuals how to manage caloric intake to prevent obesity-related complications.
The Goal: Increasing Life Expectancy
The Eccles facility is the first step in a broader national goal to increase the average life expectancy of Guyanese citizens. By starting with healthcare workers, the Ministry hopes to create “wellness ambassadors” who can lead by example.
