NETHERLANDS BOUND COCAINE INTERCEPTED AT CJIA, GROUND HANDLING STAFF IN CUSTODY

CANU Intercepts 67 Kilos of Cocaine at CJIA

A staff member of the new Timehri handling service remains in custody after anti-drug agents intercepted 67 kilograms of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). The narcotics were about to be placed on a KLM flight bound for Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) confirmed that its agents, acting on intelligence, conducted an operation on Sunday and discovered 53 parcels of cocaine concealed in a cargo container with a false bottom.

Head of CANU, James Singh, told Nightly News on Monday that investigations are still ongoing and the suspect in custody is being questioned. Initial findings suggest that someone deliberately cut a hole in a perimeter fence, smuggled the drugs into the cargo area, and attempted to hide them in the outbound shipment.

Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Oneidge Walrond, in a statement on Facebook, praised CANU’s efforts, noting that this seizure is about more than an arrest.

“It’s about protecting our borders, safeguarding our people, and defending Guyana’s good name on the international stage. Heartfelt thanks to our brave men and women in uniform whose tireless work keeps our nation safe and proud,” the Minister stated.

She added that the bust represents another major win against transnational crime.
