Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir is calling on the Government of Guyana to provide clear, timely, and continuous updates to the public in the wake of the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, warning that a lack of information could fuel panic and uncertainty.

Walton-Desir, who also leads the Forward Guyana Movement, said that in situations of heightened regional tension, transparent communication with citizens is critical. She cautioned that, in the absence of reliable information, speculation and misinformation often take hold, leading to unnecessary fear among the population.

According to the parliamentarian, developments in Venezuela have direct implications for Guyana as a neighbouring state, particularly for migration flows and border security. She noted that the unfolding situation carries the risk of spillover effects, including an increase in displaced persons seeking refuge, and stressed that Guyana cannot afford to be passive.

Walton-Desir argued that citizens need reassurance that the government has a clear, well-thought-out plan to manage any potential fallout. She said consistent updates would help maintain calm, prevent panic, and ensure the public understands the measures being implemented to safeguard national security and social stability.

The MP also emphasised the importance of heightened vigilance in border regions, calling for careful attention to ensure peace and order are preserved. She warned that regional instability, particularly following what has been described internationally as a dramatic and forceful U.S. operation, could exacerbate existing migration pressures.

Reports emerging so far indicate that military installations in Venezuela were damaged and that military personnel lost their lives during what U.S. officials have characterised as a precision extraction. The operation has raised concerns among regional leaders, with several arguing that the action violated Venezuelan sovereignty.

As the situation continues to evolve, Walton-Desir reiterated her call for ongoing communication from the government, stressing that informed citizens are less likely to panic and more likely to respond calmly during periods of regional uncertainty.
