Batavia to Get First Modern Nursery School; $300M Secondary School Planned for Katoonarib

By HGP Nightly News

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – In a landmark move to close the education access gap between Guyana’s coastland and hinterland, the Ministry of Education has announced two major school projects in Regions 7 and 9.

The village of Batavia in Region 7 will soon welcome its first modern nursery school, bringing quality early childhood education to the heart of the Cuyuni River community. The project builds on the existing Batavia Primary School, which opened in 1998, and is part of the government’s push to ensure equal learning opportunities for all children, regardless of geographic location.

Secondary School for Deep South Rupununi

In Region 9, a new secondary school with a capacity for 240 students will be constructed at Katoonarib in the Deep South Rupununi. Estimated to cost just under $300 million, the facility will feature:

  • Science laboratories
  • A canteen
  • A small dormitory
  • Other amenities designed to shorten travel times and improve learning conditions

The school will serve students from Katoonarib and surrounding communities, reducing the need for long and difficult daily journeys.

Part of a National Strategy

These developments form part of a broader national strategy to construct and upgrade schools across Guyana, particularly in hinterland regions, to improve access to quality education.
