MANICKCHAND MEETS WITH REGIONAL EXECUTIVES, LAYS OUT MINISTRY’S MANDATE

Manickchand Meets Regional Officials: Push for Accountable Local Governance

BY Antonio Dey | HGP Nightly News

Georgetown, Guyana – Newly appointed Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, has pledged to drive good governance, accountability, and effective service delivery following her first closed-door engagement with regional representatives from education, health, and public infrastructure.

Manickchand stressed that development must be inclusive, ensuring that “no community is left behind.” She underscored the role of local bodies such as Neighborhood and Regional Democratic Councils, reminding officials that their performance directly impacts ordinary citizens.

“We want to make sure every household feels what President Ali wants them to feel — our love and kindness through services,” the minister said, noting that failure to function effectively at the local level means people in villages will suffer.

Regional officials outlined challenges they currently face, which Manickchand assured will not go unnoticed. She emphasized the need for urgent reviews of delayed projects, promising to ensure their completion without further setbacks.

“What are projects that have not been completed? Why? How do we move past this point to completion? Those are the questions we will tackle,” she declared.

Manickchand called for full cooperation across regional and local levels of governance, noting that accountability and timely delivery of services remain the benchmarks of her ministry’s approach.
