LINDEN MAYOR SEEKING RELIEF FOR AFFECTED WEST WATOOKA RESIDENTS AS FLOOD WATERS RECEDE

By Marvin Cato | HGP Nightly News |

As floodwaters receded in the West Watooka squatting area, Dominique Blair, Mayor of the Linden Town Council, is calling on the central government to urgently provide relief to residents who suffered losses during the recent flooding in Region Ten.

The Mayor met with affected families in West Watooka after the floodwaters receded, as residents began cleanup efforts and assessed the damage. According to Blair, the flooding has had a severe impact on livelihoods, particularly for small-scale farmers who lost cash crops and livestock—losses he described as a direct threat to household food security and income stability.

Blair stressed that many residents are facing significant setbacks and have limited resources to recover on their own. He noted that pensioners and families with school-aged children were among those hardest hit, compounding the social and economic strain caused by the flooding.

While acknowledging that medium- and long-term work is underway to improve roadways and drainage systems in the area, the Mayor cautioned that greater attention must be paid to preventing future blockages of the main drainage pipe that channels excess water into the Demerara River. He warned that without proper maintenance and oversight, similar flooding could recur.

The Linden Mayor said he will continue to lobby the central government for timely intervention and support, emphasizing that immediate relief is necessary to help affected families rebuild and restore their livelihoods.
